Predictors of Men’s Acceptance of Modern Contraceptive Practice: Study in Rural Vietnam

Abstract: Studies have shown family planning adoption is likely to be more effective for women when men are actively involved. The transtheoretical model of behavior change was used to examine men's involvement in general contraception and intrauterine device (IUD) use by their wives. The study was carried out in rural Vietnam with 651 eligible participants. Cons of IUD use for men in precontemplation and contemplation/preparation were significantly higher than those in the action/maintenance stages, whereas the reverse… Show more

“…In traditional society where decisions are largely taken by men, they should be actively involved in reproductive decision of the couple. 5 This study revealed that the education status and level of the husband is associated with acceptance of any kinds of contraceptives. Husband approval of family planning is also important to those women who intend to use modern contraceptives in future.…”

“…Grouping patients by behaviors and beliefs has been useful for designing educational campaigns and health-care interventions. [12][13][14][15][16][17] With regard to motivation for behavioral changes in other fields, brief interventions have been shown to be useful that are based on a specific state or trait markers of patients. 15,[17][18][19][20] Previous major studies on ED treatment-related behaviors (for example, Global Study of Sexual Attitudes and Behaviors (GSSAB), 6 men's attitudes to life events and sexuality (MALES), 7,9 CrossNational Survey on Male Health Issues (CNSMHI) 3,8 ) reported findings for total samples and did not break down results by variation in sexual attitudes.…”

“…A variety of factors have been reported to influence contraceptive use among this population [6][7][8][9]. However, how these factors are associated with each other, and how they influence the stages of behavioral change for contraceptive use are not clear, warranting more research.…”

“…The relationship between stages of change for contraceptive use and self-efficacy has been demonstrated in cross-sectional studies [10]. Men's self-efficacy for contraception is a significant predictor of their stages of change to accept intrauterine devices (IUD) for contraception [7]. Findings from qualitative studies with women indicated that a high degree of self-efficacy for contraceptive use may contribute to successful initiation and continuation of contraceptive use [11].…”
