Predictors of knowledge transfer between expatriates and host country nationals

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influences of cultural intelligence, feedback-seeking behavior and shared vision as a mediator on bi-directional knowledge transfer involving expatriates and host country nationals (HCNs). Design/methodology/approach This paper integrates the signaling theory, the social capital theory and the anxiety and uncertainty theory in investigating the relationships between predictors and knowledge transfer in a bi-directional manner. The participants of the st… Show more

“…According to Pillay et al (2021), trust permits workers to draw on previous experiences and share know-how, thus enabling the externalisation of knowledge. Shared vision is a linking instrument that supports different groups of personnel (Zulkifly et al , 2019).…”

“…Fourthly, this study acts as a bridge to connect cultural intelligence and HCN literature. As mentioned above, the role of cultural intelligence has only recently been tested empirically in HCN-related studies and they mostly focused specifically on expatriate-HCN knowledge transfer and acquisition (Hsu et al, 2022; Zulkifly et al, 2020). This study extends the literature by following the suggestions to dig deeper into the specific dimensions of cultural intelligence (Ott and Michailova, 2018; Rockstuhl and Van Dyne, 2018), this study examines HCNs’ motivational cultural intelligence.…”

“…Researchers who are interested in the antecedents and outcomes of cultural intelligence have been particularly interested in expatriates, mainly because of their cross-cultural working relations (for a review, please see Ott and Michailova, 2018). However, the literature has only begun to explore the role of cultural intelligence from the HCN perspective with an emphasis on the effect of cultural intelligence on expatriate-HCN knowledge transfer and acquisition (Hsu et al, 2022; Zulkifly et al, 2020). Both of these studies used an overall cultural intelligence measure as an independent variable for increasing knowledge transfer and acquisition.…”

“…Shared vision was measured using a revised version of Gutierrez et al 's (2009) six-item scale. Following from Zulkifly et al (2019), terms such as “our work unit” or “people in our work unit” were replaced with “my host country colleague and I.” Using a 7-point Likert scale ranging from strongly disagree (1) to strongly agree (7), the SIEs responded to items such as “My host country colleague and I share the same ambitions and vision at work” and “My host country colleague and I share a common vision of the organization's future.” Cronbach's alpha for this scale was 0.90.…”
