Predictors of health-related quality of life in adult cochlear implant recipients in South Africa

Abstract: A range of significant prognostic indicators were identified for HRQoL outcomes in adult CI recipients. These predictors of HRQoL outcomes can guide intervention services' informational counselling.

“…Cochlear implants (CIs) have dramatically improved the lives of adults with postlingual deafness . In recent years, interest has grown in assessing health‐related quality of life (QOL), specifically the impact of CIs, both as a way to demonstrate the cost‐effectiveness of cochlear implantation, and to examine the functional impact of CIs more broadly . However, QOL measures are not routinely obtained clinically; instead, postoperative assessments generally consist of CI‐aided speech recognition, most often in quiet.…”

“…1 In recent years, interest has grown in assessing health-related quality of life (QOL), specifically the impact of CIs, both as a way to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of cochlear implantation, and to examine the functional impact of CIs more broadly. [2][3][4][5][6] However, QOL measures are not routinely obtained clinically; instead, postoperative assessments generally consist of CI-aided speech recognition, most often in quiet. Because the principal motivation of most CI candidates is to improve speech recognition, it may be hypothesized that this outcome will be directly related to postimplant QOL.…”

“…In general, there are limited published data on cochlear implantation in SA, and national outcome data were published only recently. [47] The limited published reports available on outcomes for paediatric and adult cochlear implantation in SA do, however, indicate positive outcomes for both paediatric [4,6] and adult [5] CI recipients.…”
