Predictors of gastrointestinal lesions on endoscopy in iron deficiency anemia without gastrointestinal symptoms

Abstract: Background: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) due to occult gastrointestinal (GI) blood loss usually remains unnoticed until patient become symptomatic. There is sparse data in IDA patients without gastrointestinal symptoms. This study was designed to find out the frequency and predictors of endoscopic lesions in IDA without gastrointestinal symptoms. Cross-sectional study performed on a convenience sample of consecutive subjects.

“…GIS bleeding result from primary GIS disease including benign or malignant neoplasm, ulceration, esophageal variceal, inflammatory bowel diseases, parasitic infections, arteriovenous malformations, bezoar, drugs such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents and steroids. Coagulopathy due to renal and hepatic diseases and inherited bleeding disorders are frequently associated with IDA [16][17][18][19]. IDA can be induced iatrogenically through excessive phlebotomies of blood donor, as a regular blood donation of 450 ml removes approximately 200 mg of iron from the body [20].…”

“…In some cases, the serum total protein values are also low due to the concomitant loss of plasma. Abdominal imaging and endoscopy are recommended to visualize intestinal organs and to assess the gastrointestinal tract for evidence of ulceration, masses or vascular malformation [18,19].…”
