Predictors of functional outcome in Saudi Arabian patients with stroke after inpatient rehabilitation

Abstract: PURPOSE: To identify the possible factors influencing functional outcome of stroke patients after inpatient rehabilitation. METHODS: One hundred and eighty patients with stroke consecutively admitted for inpatient stroke rehabilitation was studied. Demographic and stroke characteristics, impairment (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale), disability level (Functional Independence Measure [FIM]), psycho-emotional state (Geriatric Depression Scale-15 [GDS-15]), cognitive function (Mini Mental State Evaluati… Show more

“…A recent study in Saudi Arabia reported that the change in total-FIM was not clinically significant (the MCID was 20). 21 Our work differs from the finding of the latter study in that the total-FIM as well as motor-FIM, and cognitive-FIM sub-scores were all clinically significant. These results, therefore, have the potential to help physicians in Saudi Arabia interpret changes in FIM scores regarding their clinical significance.…”

“…In SA, a prospective study was conducted on 180 patients with stroke who were referred to an active rehabilitation program between February 2008 and October 2010, with the goal of identifying the factors that possibly influence functional outcomes after inpatient rehabilitation. 14 The study results showed that rehabilitation could be effective in elderly patients with stroke and that age predicts the outcome to a lesser extent than other clinical covariates, such as the FIM score at admission. The results of studies have varied, however, regarding the methodological differences in participant type, participant age (often treated as continuous), and the length of rehabilitation.…”

“…A prospective case series study by Beninato et al [ 30 ] of 113 stroke patients suggested that changes in FIM scores were associated with MCID; they reported total FIM, FIM motor, and FIM cognitive score changes of 22, 17, and 3, respectively. In Saudi Arabia, Abdul-Sattar and Godab [ 31 ] found that the change in total FIM was not clinically significant (the MCID was 20). It also indicated that stroke severity, stroke recurrence, cognitive impairment, and depression influenced the functional outcome of stroke patients in the IRP.…”
