Predictors of functional deterioration in Chinese patients with Psoriatic arthritis: a longitudinal study

Abstract: BackgroundPsoriatic arthritis (PsA) disease activities at baseline may determine physical function over time. There is no longitudinal data on course of physical function in PsA patients from Asia. We aim to describe variables associated with a deterioration of physical function in PsA in Chinese over a 6-year period.Methods125 consecutive patients with PsA fulfilled the CASPAR criteria from a rheumatology outpatient center were recruited to give sociodemographic and clinical data in 2006 to 2008. Follow up in… Show more

“…According to consensus findings from an international task force, the primary goal of treating individuals with PsA is to "maximize long-term health-related quality of life and social participation through control of signs and symptoms, prevention of structural damage, normalization or preservation of function, avoidance of toxicities, and minimization of comorbidities" 19 . Thus, it is noteworthy that IV GOL can effectively treat these diverse aspects of PsA, including inhibition of radiographic progression, which is particularly consequential for longer-term outcomes of patient function and disability 20,21 . Further analyses will extend radiographic evaluation of IV GOL in patients with PsA through 1 year to address a limitation of the current report (i.e., relatively short duration of followup in this chronic disease).…”

“…It affects young adults of working age, with typical age of onset in the 30–50s ( 1 ). Destructive changes in bones can develop early resulting in joint damage and loss of function ( 2 – 4 ). Furthermore, higher inflammatory burden over time may lead to accelerated atherosclerosis, increased cardiovascular morbidity ( 5 , 6 ), and possible early mortality for those with severe disease ( 7 , 8 ).…”

“…The prevalence of psoriatic disease is reported to be 3.15% in the United States [2]. Very often, it progresses rapidly to permanent joint destruction, leading to functional impairment and deteriorated quality of life in patients [3]. With the launch of new biologic agents for psoriatic diseases in the past few years, the awareness among physicians and the general public of this nasty condition is increasing, which has resulted in an overall increase in the number of diagnosed cases of psoriatic disease [4,5].…”

“…With the launch of new biologic agents for psoriatic diseases in the past few years, the awareness among physicians and the general public of this nasty condition is increasing, which has resulted in an overall increase in the number of diagnosed cases of psoriatic disease [4,5]. However, there is little updated epidemiological information on PsA in Hong Kong [1,3]. The majority of local data is based on a study of 127 Chinese PsA patients conducted over a decade ago in which the sample size was relatively small [1,3].…”
