Predictors of Depression Three Months After Cardiac Hospitalization

Abstract: The five clinically accessible variables identified as predictors in this study may assist physicians in identification of cardiac patients who are at risk of persistent depression and who may require active intervention. Given that depression in cardiac patients is related to increased mortality and morbidity and that it is currently poorly diagnosed, these findings may have implications for preventing adverse outcomes.

“…7,17,25 Although the present study supports these findings, the results add to the notion that angina patients do have a worse HRQoL, and that this functional status remains impaired on all of the multi-dimensional subscales 6 months post-cardiac event. This study indicates that this group of patients may not be recovering as quickly as the other patients in the sample.…”

“…However, the potential for worsening comorbid medical disease to cause depression in patients with chronic illnesses has been less well studied. In small studies of other chronic illnesses, the presence of disability (54) and other medical conditions (55) has been associated with incident depression. Patients with ESRD have greater prevalence of medical comorbidity, disability, and poor quality of life compared with other populations (4,29,35,36,56 -59).…”

“…Moreover, results from the M-HART trial of a psychosocial home nursing intervention [13] and recent post hoc subgroup analyses from the ENRICHD trial of cognitive behavioral therapy [14] both revealed that interventions to address depression may be more effective in male cardiac patients than in female patients. Much recent research attention has focused on the correlates of depression in ACS, how they may differ between the sexes, and how to mitigate its effect on cardiac outcome [7,[15][16][17][18].…”
