Predictors of complications associated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation

Abstract: Objectives: to identify in the literature, the predictors of ECMO complications in adult patients. Methods: integrative review of literature, including articles in Portuguese, English and Spanish published from 2014 to 2018 in five databases. Included articles which analyzed the predictive factors of ECMO complications in adult patients using multivariate analysis. Results: a total of 1629 articles were identified, of which 19 were included. Nineteen predictors were identified for neurological complications … Show more

“…In this study, the average ECMO duration and the ratio of long-term ECMO were higher in the life-threatening mechanical complication group than in the no mechanical complication group. Since long-term ECMO support can increase the chances of complications, 14,15 we normalized the rate of each complication and survival by the duration of ECMO (Table, Supplemental Digital Content 1, http://links.lww.com/ASAIO/ A589). It did not impact the incidence of hemorrhage and thrombotic complications; however, survival rates were significantly lower in the life-threatening mechanical complication group.…”

“…Table 5 shows the recommended daily intake values 36 for the analytes Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Na, and Zn and the calculated values for conventional chicken, country chicken, turkey and Christmas chicken considering the recommended daily requirement of meat for an adult individual of 100 g per day. [36][37][38][39] The calculated values for all samples are below the recommended daily intake limit for the investigated metals, which shows that chicken's meat are a complementary part of a healthy diet and that there is a need for other sources providing the nutrients of these analytes, considered essential for the functioning of cellular metabolism. For Christmas chicken (spiced), Na presented a high intake value (403.60 mg per 100 g).…”

“…Neurologic complications occur during or immediately after ECMO and are associated with poor survival [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Acute ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, seizures, cognitive decline, and brain death are a few of the short-term complications [ 7 ].…”
