Predictors of chronic shoulder pain after 5 years in a working population

Abstract: The role of psychosocial and physical factors in the development of shoulder pain has now been clearly demonstrated. However, only a few studies have analyzed these associations over time. The main goal of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of work-related psychological and mechanical factors on chronic shoulder pain. A total of 12,714 subjects (65% men) born in 1938, 1943, 1948, and 1953 participating in a French prospective longitudinal epidemiological investigation in 1990 to 1995 Enquête Santé… Show more

“…Low decision authority and job strain were associated with lack of recovery in men. These psychological factors were not reported by Bonde et al [2003] nor in studies on shoulder pain [Miranda et al, 2001;Luime et al, 2004;Herin et al, 2012;Sadeghian et al, 2013]. However, another study found that subjects exposed to job strain had a higher chance of being symptom-free from neck/shoulder pain than those who were not exposed and they could not explain this result [Grooten et al, 2007].…”

“…In 2011, work-related MSDs represented 79% of occupational diseases in France and shoulder disorders accounted for 37% of the MSDs [Caisse Nationale de l'Assurance Maladie des Travailleurs Salariés, 2012]. Previous studies have examined the factors associated with recovery or recurrence of shoulder pain in workers [Miranda et al, 2001;Cassou et al, 2002;Luime et al, 2004;Grooten et al, 2007;Herin et al, 2012;Sadeghian et al, 2013]. However, factors associated with the recurrence of clinically diagnosed shoulder disorder have been little studied in workers [Bonde et al, 2003;Silverstein et al, 2006].…”

“…Patients with CSP need cost about € 4139 per year 4 and CSP causes about 4.5 million visits to physicians in the United States. 5 CSP can lower the quality of life, 6 reduce the ability to work, cause emotional disorders and has substantial socio-economic impact. 7 For these reasons, it is appropriate to explore the neural mechanisms of CSP, which are associated with clinical treatment.…”
