“…These findings also provide evidence that multiplex ties are unique from more unidimensional ones, occupying critical positions in the social lives of individuals. Consistent with previous research, we find that multiplexity reflects overlapping motivations for interaction and exchange of resources, resulting in intimate and more broadly functional ties (Kogovsek et al, 2013). Most interesting is the finding that multiplex ties are substantially more likely than unidimensional kinship and friendship ties to be a context for discussion of important matters.…”

“…Additional research demonstrates that multiplexity plays a role in the quality of relationships and the resources flowing through social networks (Cross et al, 2001). Overall, multiplex ties tend to be more intimate, supportive, and voluntary (Kogovsek et al, 2013;Wellman & Wortley, 1990). Multiplex ties stake numerous claims on the attention of individuals embedded in them, and foster more detailed knowledge of the needs of interaction partners (Verbrugge, 1977).…”

“…CODA has the twofold objective of making compositional data statistically treatable and of getting the most of the relative information carried by the data. Social scientists have recently become aware of the CODA tradition, and have successfully used it when faced to similar problems (e.g., Coenders et al, 2011; Fry, 2011; Kogovšek et al, 2013; Ferrer-Rosell et al, 2015, in press; Trendafilov and Gallo, 2015; van Eijnatten et al, 2015; Vives-Mestres et al, 2015). The problem of possible fixed sum representation and the interest in relative information are shared by KLSI researchers who can thus benefit from using CODA.…”

“…The CoDa tradition started with Aitchison's seminal work (1982Aitchison's seminal work ( , 1986 on chemical and geological compositions where only the proportion of each part or component is of interest, since absolute amounts are irrelevant and only tell about the size of the chemical or soil sample (e.g., Buccianti et al, 2006). Nowadays, CoDa spans almost all the hard sciences and has started to be used in several fields of the social sciences, such as education (Batista-Foguet et al, 2015), economics (Fry, 2011), marketing (Vives-mestres et al, 2016), accounting (Linares-Mustarós et al, 2018), tourism Coenders, 2016), values (van Eijnatten et al, 2015), social networks (Kogovšek et al, 2013), time use (Martín-Fernández et al, 2015a) and election studies (Egozcue and Pawlowsky-Glahn, 2011;Liscano Fierro and Ortiz Rico, 2017). Content analysis in the study of the media and media groups and the analysis of AS, which resides in the communication of these media, pose similar problems in all respects as those encountered in chemical and geological analyses.…”
