Predictive value of chemotherapy-related high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) elevation in patients with colorectal cancer receiving adjuvant chemotherapy: an exploratory analysis of 851 cases

Abstract: Background: The phenomenon of chemotherapy-related lipid alterations has been reported based on a small number of patients and varies among different cancers. However, little is known about these alterations in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients.

“…It is implied that liver functional reserve became poorer with the decrease of TC (Vere et al, 2012 ; Wang et al, 2014 ). Several studies have shown low serum TC level and low serum HDL level were associated with worse disease-free survival and overall survival in HCC patients undergoing surgical hepatectomy, breast cancer patients, colorectal cancer patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy, and non-small-cell lung patients with EGFR mutations (Lee et al, 2016 ; Li et al, 2016 ; Wang et al, 2016 ; Zhang et al, 2017 ). However, these studies focused on the prognostic significance of single index of TC or HDL in post-surgery patients with cancers.…”

“…Recent studies have reported that serum high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is in relation to incident cancers especially breast cancer. These findings imply that HDL might play a major role in tumorigenesis and tumor progression (Lim et al, 2007 ; Li et al, 2016 ; Wang et al, 2016 ). However, an integrated indicator based on serum TC and HDL levels, which might be superior to reflect the correlation between hepatic damage and tumor stages, has not yet been reported in HCC.…”

“…Interestingly, post-treatment ApoA-I levels also seem to confer prognostic significance. A retrospective study of colorectal cancer patients treated with surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy showed that relatively increased levels of HDL-c and ApoA-I, one month after the completion of chemotherapy, were associated with better prognosis [144]. ApoA-I levels have been especially evaluated in response to chemosensitivity.…”

“…The level of some lipoproteins also seems to be of prognostic significance. In case of CRC, for example, elevated high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels during chemotherapy showed a positive effect on overall survival (OS) and diseasefree survival (DFS) [285], whereas the higher level of LDL-C found in patients with metastatic CRC (mCRC), as well as the LDL-C to HDL-C ratio (LHR), acted as independent indicators associated with a worse prognosis [286].…”
