Predictive Assessment of Individual Human Susceptibility to Damaging Cold Exposure

Abstract: According to a systematic review of published data in both the national and international scientific indexing systems, including the results of our own researches, there have been selected evidence-based criteria and internal genotype-phenotype risk determinants for assessing the individual susceptibility to the acute cold exposure. In accordance with these criteria, the list of cold-related health conditions was defined. This list includes 33 classes and groups of diseases and conditions by ICD-10 codes, aris… Show more

“…The temperature of the ice bath, for example, significantly impacts pain perception, with lower temperatures causing higher levels of discomfort (Galvan, 2006) (16). Moreover, individual susceptibility plays a crucial role, and researchers have developed predictive models that take into account both external and internal risk determinants (Chashchin, 2017) (17). The timing and thickness of the ice bath can also impact hydrologic responses in Arctic lakes, which may have implications for ice bath application as a recovery strategy (Arp, 2015) (18).…”

“…При високій вологості повітря погіршується якість самого повітря як ізолятора [43,44]. Суб'єктивні відчуття холоду у вологому повітрі (при його температурі менше, ніж температура шкіри) виникають з тієї причини, https://emergency.zaslavsky.com.ua огляд / Scientific Review що при збільшенні вологості (збільшується й рівноважна вологість поверхні шкіри) число молекул води, що конденсуються на поверхні шкіри, збільшується [45].…”

“…Cold environments require additional amount of thyroid hormones [ 12 ], enhancing triiodothyronine (T3) production from thyroxine (T4) to activate the heat production at local level in brown adipose tissue which is essential in the cold adaptation of Arctic residents [ 13 ]. Hypothyroidism increases human susceptibility to cold-induced health effects [ 14 ]. Due to extreme climatic conditions in a large part of Russia studies on the prevalence of IDD and adequate I supplementation are important public health issues in Russia.…”
