Prediction scenarios of past, present, and future environmental suitability for the Mediterranean species Arbutus unedo L.

Abstract: Climate change is a challenge for forests in the coming decades, with a major impact on species adaptation and distribution. The Mediterranean Basin is one of the most vulnerable hotspots for biodiversity conservation under climate change in the world. This research aimed at studying a Mediterranean species well adapted to the region: the Arbutus unedo L. (strawberry tree). The MaxEnt, a presence-only species-distribution software, was used to model A. unedo’s environmental suitability. The current species pot… Show more

“…Species Distribution Modelling (SDM) is a powerful method for predicting where a species occurs in the landscape and how a species distribution will respond to changing climatic conditions 33 35 . This approach uses the relationship between species' occurrences and climatic variables at those locations, such as average annual rainfall and average maximum temperature in the warmest month, to estimate its geographic distribution 36 , 37 .…”

“…The contribution of each variable to the regularized gain of the model was quantified as percentage contribution. The values in the corresponding column in the input matrix were permuted, and MaxEnt's gain before and after permutation was compared to obtain each variable permutation importance (Almeida et al, 2022 ; Valencia‐Rodríguez et al, 2021 ). The continuous distribution probability was classified by using the “reclassify” function in ArcGIS 10.4.…”

“…The species' distribution range reflects its adaptation to the Mediterranean-type climate of the world. Such a climate is considered one of the most vulnerable zones to global warming (Almeida et al, 2022;Kassout et al, 2022). The current distribution range is stretched across many regions of all the continents, especially prominent parts of the southern hemisphere.…”
