Prediction of long-term service life of an organic coating based on short-term exposure results

Abstract: Purpose This study aims to provide a model to predict the service life of a thick organic coating. Design/methodology/approach A series of thin coating films are rapidly tested under the same exposure condition as the thick coating in its service condition by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Findings The validity of the model is successfully verified. The long-term protectiveness or service life of a thick o… Show more

“…Our understanding of the samples’ inhibitory mechanisms can be improved with the help of Figure 9. Although exhibiting better barrier effect on aggressive media, the epoxy coatings are easy to generate defects in the process of curing and service life, resulting in the loss of barrier performance (Xu et al , 2022). The fillers can not only fill microscopic defects in coatings, but their flake structure can also create a labyrinth effect, which can lengthen the diffusion routes of electrolyte solution.…”

“…In particular, the influence of UV light with wavelengths between 280 and 400 nm is the main reason for the discoloration of color paintings (Liu and Liu, 2018). Surface sealing coating is the simplest and most commonly used method to protect colored paintings (Xu et al , 2022). The sealing coating must be transparent to avoid affecting the original appearance of colored paintings.…”

“…For example, they cost more, require some additional equipment or hookups and were prone to wear and tear. Under conditions that require good protection, excellent durability and low cost at the same time, organic paints make a very good option (Xu et al , 2022; Tan et al , 2021; Yang et al , 2021; Attia et al , 2022). Currently, organic coatings commonly used in the corrosion prevention field are phenolic resin coatings, polyurethane coatings and epoxy resin coatings (Sari et al , 2020; Lin et al , 2021a, 2021b; Gu et al , 2018; Zhang et al , 2020; Li et al , 2022).…”
