Cerium dioxide modified with fumaric acid as corrosion inhibitor for epoxy coatings on Q235

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this study is to modify cerium dioxide with fumaric acid (CeO2-f) to improve its compatibility and dispersibility in epoxy resin and to investigate the effect of the content on the coating performance. Design/methodology/approach To investigate whether CeO2-f reacts with epoxy resin by ring opening, CeO2-f and epoxy resin-treated CeO2-f (Ce CeO2-f/EP) were analyzed by infrared radiation (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis). “…This indicates that a chemical reaction occurred after treating the filler with EP, resulting in the chemical bond breaking. In addition, the stretching vibration of the epoxy ring located at 912 cm −1 did not appear in the spectra of CeO 2 -F/EP, implying that epoxy ring was involved in the chemical reaction and the unreacted E-44 has been eliminated (Dong et al , 2023). Based on the above discussion, E-44 has undergone a chemical ring opening reaction with CeO 2 -f.…”

“…CeO 2 and cerium salts are effective metal corrosion inhibitors and are frequently used by researchers to modify PANI fillers (Dong et al, 2023a;Dong et al, 2023b;Tavandashti et al, 2016a). The protection of PANI/CeO 2 epoxy coatings was accessed by Lei et al (2020), and results from LEIS have demonstrated the exceptional improvement of corrosion protection performance provided by the PANI/ CeO 2 /epoxy coatings.…”

“…For the first approach, various organic and inorganic inhibitors were added into the epoxy coating formulations (De Lima-Neto et al , 2008; Morozov et al , 2019; Toorani et al , 2021; Sanaei et al , 2017; Bahrani et al , 2018; Xavier, 2018; Nguyen et al , 2022b; Dong et al , 2023a; Dong et al , 2023b). These inhibitors were added into coating ingredients through various coating layers, such as pretreatment/primer coat/topcoat.…”
