Prediction and improvement of iron casting quality through analytics and Six Sigma approach

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this technical paper is to explore the application of analytics and Six Sigma in the manufacturing processes for iron foundries. This study aims to establish a causal relationship between chemical composition and the quality of the iron casting to achieve the global benchmark quality level. Design/methodology/approach The case study-based exploratory research design is used in this study. The problem discovery is done through the literature survey and Delphi method-based expert opinion… Show more

“…Many researchers have studied the benefits and the challenges of LSS in different areas, from the manufacturing one to services (Singh and Rathi, 2019). In a first period the applications were only industry-based, and they are continuing also today (Buell and Turnipseed, 2004; Tolga Taner et al , 2007; Alkunsol et al , 2019; Mishra and Rane, 2019); then, LSS was moved to healthcare studies with a positive impact (de Koning et al , 2006; DelliFraine et al , 2010; Montella et al , 2017). Trzeciak et al (2018) analyzed patients with prolonged mechanical ventilation in a multidisciplinary intensive care unit in order to reduce LOS, while Molla et al (2018) focused on the timing of patients’ discharge.…”

“…Researchers from all over the world has studied for years the benefits and the challenges of both lean thinking and SS in different sectors, from manufacturing area to services (Tjahjono et al , 2010; Singh and Rathi, 2019). After a first period of industrial applications that continues nowadays (Alkunsol et al , 2019; Silva et al , 2019; Mishra and Rane, 2019), SS was moved to healthcare studies with a positive impact (Converso et al , 2012; Niemeijer et al , 2012). It has been receiving more attention in the healthcare context since 2001 when it was introduced by Commonwealth Health Corporation in partnership with general electric, because of its help in quality improvements actions (Pepper and Spedding, 2010).…”

“…In this study, F -test and t -test are used to validate the results of improvement in fleet performance by monitoring critical parameters. (Mishra and Rane, 2018) used χ 2, F and t -test to validate business results of improvement in iron casting quality based on hypothesis statements. (Rane and Mishra, 2018) demonstrated the F and t -test to validate the impact of the discover-innovate-predict-perform-sustain model on analytical goal achievement.…”
