The industries are expanding their business into new foreign markets as a result of the globalization. It is very essential for the companies to understand the risks involved with the international projects for sustained competitiveness and growth in global market. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of research on various risk categories associated with international projects and the barriers to effective risk management through a systematic literature survey. The findings derived from the evaluation of the publications analyzed have led to the identification of 17 different types of risk categories associated with the international projects in various sectors of industries and 10 different barriers to effective risk management. The success of risk management in the international projects will be based on proper identification of risks, application of appropriate risk management methodology and proactive leadership to overcome the barriers to effectively implement risk management. The risk categories were verified and ranked through the feedbacks from more than 25 Project professionals and the response strategies have been suggested.

The aim of this study was to obtain an extract rich in phenolic compounds with high antioxidant activity from dill (Anethum graveolens L.). To optimize the ultrasound-assisted extraction process, a Taguchi (L9) orthogonal matrix which consists of three levels and three factors including solute: solvent ratio (A; 1:100, 3:100 and 5:100), sonication temperature (B; 30, 45, 60 °C) and sonication time (C; 5, 10, 15 min) was used. In the single response optimization based on the Taguchi method, the optimum ultrasonic extraction parameters for total phenolic content and antioxidant activity (DPPH) were determined as A1B3C3 and A1B1C1, respectively. In this study, MOORA (Multi-Objective Optimization by Ratio Analysis) was utilized to convert a two-response problem into a single response. As a result of this optimization, the solute: solvent ratio, sonication temperature, and sonication time variables were determined as 1:100, 60 °C and 15 min, respectively (Run 3), for the extract with the highest total phenolic and antioxidant content (A1B3C3). According to the results obtained, the solute: solvent ratio was found to be the parameter that most significantly affected the ultrasonic extraction process for both response variables. The Taguchi-MOORA hybrid optimization technique was successfully applied to the ultrasonic extraction of bioactive components from dill.

Purpose Project risk management (PRM) and human resource management (HRM) are the two critical success factors (CSFs) for international project management. This paper aims to correlate these two CSFs, identify the human resource (HR) barriers, develop a hybrid model for risk management and develop strategies to overcome the HR barriers to effective risk management in international projects. Design/methodology/approach In total, 20 key HR barriers have been identified through a literature survey and verified by project professionals. These HR barriers are ranked according to their ability to trigger other barriers by analysing their interactions using the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method. Based on Ulrich’s revised model for HR functions, a hybrid framework for international PRM has been proposed. Findings DEMATEL analysis categorized nine barriers as cause barriers and 11 as affected barriers. The “PROJECTS” model proposed for HR strategy development suggests eight strategies to overcome these nine cause barriers. The hybrid PRM framework developed includes the effect of the HR dimension. Research limitations/implications This paper presents the generalized prioritization of HR barriers to international PRM. For a specific international project, the HR barriers and their prioritization may change slightly. The hybrid framework for PRM and the strategy development model suggested are yet to be validated. Originality/value Correlating two CSFs in international project management, i.e. HRM and PRM and ranking the HR barriers using the DEMATEL method is the uniqueness of this research paper. The hybrid framework developed for PRM based on HR functions in Ulrich’s revised model and the proposed new HR strategy development model “PROJECTS” are unique contributions of this paper.
