Predicting the throwing velocity of the ball in handball with anthropometric variables and isotonic tests

Abstract: The goal of this study was to 1) investigate general body influence, hand-specific anthropometric parameters, and upper-limb power and strength on ball-throwing velocity in a standing position (V ball ); and 2) predict this velocity using the multi-regression analysis method. Forty-two skilled male handball players (age = 21 y±2.99; body height = 1.81 m±0.07; body mass =78.3 kg±11.3) participated in this study. We measured general anthropometric parameters (body height, body mass, lean mass, BMI) and handball-… Show more

“…According to a report about the relationship between human evolution and throwing motion, progressive thumb opposition and grip movement have led to throwing improvements 18) . A significant correlation between grip strength and throwing ability was also observed for other throwing activities, such as handball 10) and water polo 19) . To increase the throwing distance, it is also necessary to release the ball at an appropriate timing.…”

“…Total body movement during throwing requires various physical fitness parameters. It has been determined that total body conditions, such as flexibility and endurance, may also be associated with ball throwing 10,11 ) . Appropriate technique also affects ball throwing in childhood.…”

“…Instead of throw velocity (Debanne & Laffaye, 2011), precision, or a comprehensive kinematic description, we focussed on different factors that promote ball release height during a jump throw, because these are important parts of this technique as well (Cardinale, 2014). …”

“…In most cases, these quantities are either measured with radar based systems, or motion capture systems and are thus depending on technical equipment which may be cost-intensive. An interesting alternative approach aims to predict the ball velocity based on anthropometric variab les and strength tests (Debanne & Laffaye, 2011). One conclusion that can be drawn is that a remarkable amount of variance (approx.…”
