Predicting Snowmelt Runoff at the Source of the Mountainous Euphrates River Basin in Turkey for Water Supply and Flood Control Issues Using HEC-HMS Modeling

Abstract: Predicting the runoff from snowpack accumulated in mountainous basins during the melting periods is very important in terms of assessing issues such as water supply and flood control. In this study, the Hydrological Engineering Center–Hydrological Modeling System (HEC-HMS) was used to simulate snowmelt runoff in the Kırkgöze–Çipak Basin that has a complex topography where altitude differences range from 1823 m to 3140 m above the sea level. The Kırkgöze–Çipak Basin, located in eastern Turkey, is a basin where … Show more

“…The HEC-HMS model consists of a basin module, a meteorological module, a control module, and a time series module [36]. The main function of the basin module is to generalize the process of rainfall-induced runoff using the HEC-GeoHMS model in ArcGIS 10.2, which involves extracting the scope of the basin and the river network through DEM analysis, dividing the sub-basins, and calculating the characteristic parameters for both the sub-basins and river channels.…”

“…The headwaters from the High Andean Rivers are located in the Andes Mountains above 4000 m of altitude. Those are forming water bodies due to the melting of glacial ice caps [1][2][3]. The headwaters of the basin serve as a water pocket zone through wetlands and lagoons and these are rich in active and reserve metal mining deposits [4,5].…”

“…There is an urgent need to adopt methodologies that allow defining sedimentation yield (Đukić and Erić, 2021). For this purpose, current tools available for hydrological modeling, such as HEC-HMS are used (Chiang et al, 2022;Revell et al, 2021;Şengül and İspirli, 2022). The current availability of environmental information of different types (thematic cartography, diverse climatic data and others) requires a method to obtain the dates and degrees.…”
