Predicting clinical behaviour of breast phyllodes tumours: a nomogram based on histological criteria and surgical margins

Abstract: A predictive nomogram based on three histological criteria and surgical margin status can be used to calculate recurrence-free survival of an individual woman diagnosed with PT. This can be applied for patient counselling and clinical management.

“…Occasionally, recurrent tumors show increased cellularity and more aggressive histological features than the original lesion. (16) In most patients, local recurrence is isolated and is not associated with the development of distant metastasis as also in our case. Tumor size and surgical margins were found to be the principal determinant of local recurrence (10) .…”

“…(15) Local recurrence in phyllodes tumors is seen between 10-20% and has been associated with inadequate local excision and narrow surgical margins. (16) Recurrences in malignant phyllodes are early to occur than in benign disease but there is no clear association with rate of recurrence. Local recurrence usually occurs within few years of surgery and histologically resembles the original tumor.…”

“…Juvenile or giant fibroadenoma is a rare pathology usually presenting in adolescent and young girls (10e18 years old) that is characterized by massive and rapid enlargement of an encapsulated mass [8]. The etiology is believed to be an end-organ hypersensitivity to normal levels of gonadal hormones.…”

“…Tumors were classified into benign, borderline, and malignant on the basis of histological features according to the WHO classification of breast tumors as previously described. 13 Histological features included stromal hypercellularity, stromal atypia, tumor microscopic margins, stromal mitotic activity, and stromal overgrowth. Patient follow-up was retrieved from medical records.…”
