“…This record, together with a number of other recent reports [Burney, 2002;Gursky, 2002;Tello et al, 2002], suggests that arboreal primates may be at least as vulnerable to attack by snakes as by raptors. However, the total number of records of any kind of attack remains prohibitively small for any systematic analysis of predation patterns in arboreal primates.…”

“…One potentially important aspect is the social context. Mobbing is a characteristic response to snakes not only in platyrrhines [Chapman, 1986;Tello et al, 2002;Perry et al, 2003], but also in such divergent forms of primates as lemurs [Burney, 2002] and tarsiers [Gursky, 2002]. Few data are available for bearded sakis, but they do seem to react collectively towards predators [Peetz, 2001] and presumably exhibit typical primate behaviour in the presence of snakes.…”

“…Reticulated pythons frequently eat long-tailed macaques (Fig. 3) and silvered leaf monkeys (Trachopithecus cristatus) (17,42) as well as lorises (26) and tarsiers (27). Northern (P. sebae) and southern (P. natalensis) African pythons eat diverse vertebrates, including galagos (25), chacma baboons (Papio hamadryas) (37), red colobus monkeys (Procolobus badius) (40), mona monkeys (Cercopithecus mona) (41), and vervets (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) (42).…”

“…In contrast, in two recently reported cases of predation by constricting snakes on prosimians, the victims' conspecifics witnessing the attacks did not launch cooperative physical attacks to rescue them. Only one individual made physical contact with a python that had captured a spectral tarsier Tarsius spectrum [Gursky, 2002], though several other tarsiers mobbed it from a safe distance. Similarly, a boa that had captured a sifaka Propithecus verreauxi was mobbed but not physically attacked by the victim's groupmates [Burney, 2002].…”
