Preconceptional factors associated with very low birthweight delivery in East and West Berlin: a case control study

Abstract: Background: Very low birthweight, i.e. a birthweight < 1500 g, is among the strongest determinants of infant mortality and childhood morbidity. To develop primary prevention approaches to VLBW birth and its sequelae, information is needed on the causes of preterm birth, their personal and social antecedents, and on conditions associated with very low birthweight. Despite the growing body of evidence linking sociodemographic variables with preterm delivery, little is known as to how this may be extrapolated to … Show more

“…With regard to exclusion of metabolic disorders and congenital anomalies, a possible explanation might be low maternal education as an influencing factor for the delay in neurodevelopment. Our study group had a higher portion of short maternal education compared with a former study in Berlin, where preconceptional factors associated with low birthweight deliveries were analyzed (19). We know that maternal education positively relates to children's intelligence quotient (20) and the retardation of the three infants particular in the skill area of hearing and speech might be due to this socioeconomic factor.…”

“…A escolaridade da mãe tem sido apontada como um fator de risco importante para a mortalidade neonatal e para os nascimentos de baixo peso 5,7,11,25,26 . No presente estudo, não foi encontrada associação significativa entre a escolaridade materna e o óbito neonatal.…”

“…4 Maternal characteristics have been variously shown to impact on the progress and outcome of pregnancy, especially those related to birth weight and perinatal mortality. 5,6,7 Such maternal factors like genetic endowment, socio-cultural, demographic, and medical conditions (e.g. hypertension, malaria, urinary tract infections, malnutrition and anaemia) are strongly associated with foetal complications especially low birth weight, prematurity and birth asphyxia all of which act individually or in concert with each other to increase neonatal and infant mortality.…”

“…hypertension, malaria, urinary tract infections, malnutrition and anaemia) are strongly associated with foetal complications especially low birth weight, prematurity and birth asphyxia all of which act individually or in concert with each other to increase neonatal and infant mortality. 7,8,9 While it is important to describe the independent effects of different behavioural and socioeconomic risk factors, we must bear in mind that these factors are not isolated events in women's lives, but are a part of many interrelated and complex behaviour and environmental risks. Many of the known determinants of a baby's birth weight are not within a woman's immediate control.…”
