Preclinical Alterations of Oral Epithelial Cells in Contact With Orthodontic Appliances

Abstract: Aim. This study evaluated the behavior of oral epithelial cells in contact with orthodontic appliances. Methods. Oral epithelial cells of clinically normal buccal mucosa were obtained by liquid-based exfoliative cytology from 22 orthodontic patients. The following regions were evaluated: a) oral mucosa exposed to friction from orthodontic brackets; b) oral mucosa exposed to friction from the tube on the orthodontic band, and c) oral mucosa not exposed to friction (control area). Nuclear (NA) and cytoplasmic (C… Show more

“…[12] In addition to these metallic ions, the composites used for bonding the bracket al so releases a variety of monomers that will have a toxic effects on adjacent oral tissue. [13] Localized corrosion can be due to plaque, acids produced by the microorganisms, and physicochemical events such as inflated levels of oxygen in saliva leading to DNA fragmentation in the buccal mucosa. [14] The residual monomers are ingested or absorbed into the digestive system through the saliva from mucosa of the mouth or pharynx.…”

“…Additionally, deep cells are rarely detected in healthy tissues, corroborating the notion that LBEC is an accurate and useful method for the evaluation and early detection of alterations that precede clinical manifestations in the oral mucosa. 27 Cell changes are an adaptive response to irritation of the oral mucosa. The cell nucleus may have a marked increase in volume, with uniform distribution of nuclear chromatin granules (karyomegaly).…”
