Precision measurements of fundamental interactions with (anti)neutrinos

Abstract: We discuss the main limitations of past neutrino scattering experiments and possible ways to address them in a next-generation program of precision measurements of fundamental interactions with (anti)neutrinos. A reduction of the longstanding precision gap with respect to electron scattering experiments could provide interesting synergies with the existing efforts in the fixed-target, collider, and nuclear physics communities.

“…7 and 9 can be achieved by reducing uncertainties on the neutrino flux and detection. From the experimental side, novel detection techniques suitable to rare neutrino events are currently under discussion, such as the magnetized HPgTPC [101] and the Straw Tube Tracker [135,136]. Together with improved analysis techniques, these will help to improve upon our projections for the sensitivity of DUNE to new physics that might be hiding at light masses and small couplings.…”

“…The Straw Tube Tracker (STT) is designed to offer a control of the configuration, chemical composition and mass of the neutrino targets similar to the one achieved in electron scattering experiments [130,139]. The base tracker technology for a STT is provided by low-mass straws (5 mm diameter, 12 µm walls, 20 micron gold-plated tungsten wire, operated with Xe/CO 2 70/30 gas at 1.9 atm) similar to the ones used in many modern experiments for precision physics or the search for rare processes [140][141][142][143][144].…”

“…• Indirect BSM searches through precision measurements of neutrino scattering properties: in the ND complex, for example, through precision measurements of sin 2 θ W [227]. • BSM searches using the ND as a short-baseline oscillation experiment: the DUNE ND is located at a distance of 570 m from the neutrino beam target, but is illuminated by a neutrino beam with energy peaking at 2.5 GeV (the reference beam design) and a beam with 5-10 GeV neutrinos (a high-energy beam-tuning option).…”
