Precision and surface integrity of threads obtained by form tapping

Abstract: Largely applied to internal threading of extruded tubes, cold form tapping is now becoming a promising process for internal threading of holes in non ferrous and ferrous solid components, more particularly for mass production in the automotive industry. The aim of this study is to present the surface properties of the threads resulting from form tapping. Geometrical characterization, surface texture, mechanical and metallurgical observations are investigated. The results obtained are discussed according to the… Show more

“…In addition of the absence of chip, using form tapping offers several benefits: an increased reliability, an increased tool life and finally better geometrical and mechanical characteristics of threads [7]. That's why this process acquires greater importance for several mechanical industries such as the automotive sector.…”

“…Breakage of a thread-cutting tool can impact significantly the productivity of the process [Veldhuis et al, 2007]. When compared to form tapping [Fromentin et al, 2005] or cut tapping , a broken tool in thread milling is easier to evacuate without damaging the workpiece, so it is a good alternative for high cost parts. While tapping requires a given tool for producing an specific thread dimension, thread milling can produce threads in bigger diameters and special threads.…”

“…Due to these distinctive principle and characteristic of internal thread forming, extrusion tapping of internal thread has caused wide research and extensive use in many industry, especially in the automotive industry [1,5,6,7]. However, extrusion tapping of internal thread also has its defects, fabricate hard, cost high, and this process is not suitable for the materials of brittle and high hardness, inclined and thin wall threaded hole [8].…”
