Pre-existing disease is associated with a significantly higher risk of death in severe respiratory syncytial virus infection

Abstract: Pre-existing disease/comorbidity, in particular multiple pre-existing diseases and cardiac anomaly, is associated with a significantly higher risk of death from severe RSV infection. Nosocomial/hospital-acquired RSV infection is an additional major risk factor for death in children with severe RSV infection.

“…High rates of pre-existing co-morbidities have also been observed in children hospitalised for hMPV [37,75], although such data may be subject to selection bias, as they come from reference centres. Underlying disease, especially chronic lung disease of prematurity and haemodynamically significant congenital heart disease, is a significant predictor of prolonged hospitalisation, frequency of ICU admission and death in children hospitalised for RSV [107,109]. Conditions such as other symptomatic chronic pulmonary disorders, trisomy 21 and neuromuscular disease also increase the risk for severe disease [110][111][112].…”

“…Respiratuvar sinsisyal virüs enfeksiyonu geçiren dört (%25) hasta ileri solunum deste¤i için yo¤un bak›m birimine yat›r›ld›.
