Pre‐ and post‐test evaluation of a project to facilitate research development in practice in a hospital setting

Abstract: There were no significant differences in findings between the pre-test and post-test. Qualitative data from those involved in the clinical projects in stage 2 indicated factors impacting on the feasibility of undertaking research in practice.

“…Secondly, a response rate of only 51% was obtained. However, this is reasonable for a survey (Hicks & Hennessy 1999) and compares favourably with that in other studies using similar methods (for example, a response rate of only 29% was reported by Marsh & Brown 1992; 36% by McSherry 1997; 52·6% by Parahoo 1999; 50% by Retsas 2000; and 50% by Clifford & Murray 2001). However, generalization of the findings must be done with some caution.…”

“…Many studies have looked at the barriers for EBP, but few have addressed innovative strategies to overcome them (Hundley et al. 2000, Clifford & Murray 2001) and these have mainly focused on the nurse, offering research training, without considering other contextual characteristics that, according to the literature, could be determinant.…”

“…Although initially the response rate of 37% was thought to be low, it compared favourably to other studies (McSherry, 1995;Clifford and Murray, 2001;Kuuppelomäki and Tuomi, 2003;Hicks, 1995Denker, 1995. It is important however, to consider the response rate, as this may not only affect how the information is used but also how future studies are undertaken.…”

“…The authors suggested that more encouragement and teaching is needed alongside the development of support systems. Clifford and Murray (2001) describe a study looking at whether a managed approach with specified research activities would enhance the capacity of nurses to use research in practice. Although this study was based in a Trust in the West Midlands, where there was no record of research activity (a situation similar to the NOC), it was a large project.…”
