We are in agreement with the comments by Corchon (2010) regarding our study, and take this opportunity to respond to her observations on RU research by staff nurses.…”

“…(2005), for example, suggest quarterly research workshops, use of research‐nurse consultants, financing staff nurses’ attendance at research conferences and developing evidence‐based practice projects. Hence, we support Corchon’s (2010) hypothesis that in terms of RU by staff nurses, it now time to move to the next level and implement strategies that will develop ‘a climate in which research is not only valued and seen for intrinsic worth but also considered an integral aspect of routine activity in an organization’ (Corchon 2010:2077).…”

“…Commenting on our findings, and reiterating previous international studies with similar results, Corchon (2010) asked two key questions regarding RU by staff nurses: First, how much more evidence is needed to initiate intervention studies that would accelerate RU by staff nurses and secondly when is nursing going to implement intervention studies that will alter organisational cultures towards research and RU? Given the state of RU research, these questions are very relevant indeed.…”

“…Further, Corchon (2010), like Carlson and Plonczynski (2008), reminds us that we have reached a point of saturation with research describing nurses’ perception of the barriers to RU, and that international evidence has already established that the ‘Setting’ is the major barrier to RU by staff nurses. Moreover, citing Rycroft‐Malone (2008), Scott and Pollock (2008), among others, Corchon suggests additional attention must be paid to the organisational culture and that continued focus on studying nurses’ perception of barriers to RU is tantamount to ignoring research evidence that already accumulated during the last 20 years.…”
