Practical aspects of implementation of a multi-domain LED model

Abstract: Based on prior paper on multi-domain modeling of LEDs this paper provides an overview of the implementation issues of such model. On one hand the option of simplifying SPICE like macro models by using a commercial, fully coupled electro-thermal simulator is shown. On the other hand implementation details of an LED model are shown in which the current components responsible for heat dissipation and light emission are described separately. Using the current component responsible for light emission the radiant fl… Show more

“…There are several studies on developing multi-domain LED model discussed in literature (Farkas et al, 2016;Poppe, 2012;Poppe, Farkas, Szekely et al, 2006;Poppe & Szalai, 2014;Poppe & Temesvölgyi, 2013). These studies have highlighted that a typical multi-domain model of an LED should include optical, electrical and thermal parameters and their interrelationships.…”

“…Multichip LED packages with a larger number of dies can also be characterized by the approach presented in this paper. As shown in [24][25][26], the thermal transient measurements can also be applied to such packages. Yet, the interpretation of the results for CTM calibration must be done with careful approach.…”

“…The multi-domain LED model presented earlier [6], [7], [8] was implemented as a subcircuit, utilizing the full electro-thermal simulation capabilities [13] of the most recent release of Mentor Graphics' ELDO Spice compatible circuit simulator. In this program it is possible to define a thermal node inside an electro-thermal subcircuit.…”

“…The emitted optical power (radiant flux) can be calculated as the product of the voltage drop and the current of the internal diode labelled Xrad. Using an efficacy of source of radiation model, with some further post processing, this radiant flux value is converted into hot lumens as described in [7]. The model parameters defined in the .model cards.…”
