Wildfires are one of the main causes of forest destruction, especially in Galicia (north-west Spain), where the area burned by forest fires in spring and summer is quite high. This work uses two semiparametric time-series models to describe and predict the weekly burned area in a year: autoregressive moving average (ARMA) modelling after smoothing, and smoothing after ARMA modelling. These models can be described as a sum of a parametric component modelled by an autoregressive moving average process and a non-parametric one. To estimate the non-parametric component, local linear and kernel regression, B-splines and P-splines were considered. The methodology and software were applied to a real dataset of burned area in Galicia for the period 1999–2008. The burned area in Galicia increases strongly during summer periods. Forest managers are interested in predicting the burned area to manage resources more efficiently. The two semiparametric models are analysed and compared with a purely parametric model. In terms of error, the most successful results are provided by the first semiparametric time-series model.

As sociedades divididas non avanzan. O eucalipto ten sido o argumento para enfrentar a poboación entre partidarios e detractores. En palabras dun vello xestor forestal “do eucalipto sólo fala mal o que non o ten”. En palabras dun activista ambiental “hai que queimalos e arrincalos todos ata que non quede ningún”. Este traballo ten como único obxectivo superar ese enfrentamento. Para elo aporta datos sobre as dúas cuestións que o autor defendeu no debate. Primeira, o eucalipto non é nin foi nin será o responsable dos lumes que se producen en Galicia, utilizalo como tal non fai máis que erralo diagnóstico e polo tanto a solución para o máis grabe problema ambiental que temos en Galicia. A segunda cuestión amosa a importancia que o eucalipto ten na nosa economía e cales son as razóns da súa expansión, en certos casos caótica i excesiva. O traballo pretende amosar argumentos para avanzar de forma conxunta na proposta dunha planificación territorial e forestal realista na que se estableza cal debe ser o papel a desempeñar polas especies do xénero Eucalyptus no futuro en toda Galicia.

Society's participation in decisions regarding land planning and management is essential for reaching viable and long-lasting solutions. The success of forest plans depends on the involvement of different stakeholders. In turn, stakeholder involvement depends on the representativity achieved in public participation in the development of the plan. The first stage, diffusion, is the key element in the process. This paper describes a methodology for the diffusion stage that obtains six times more participants than a similar process. Its aim is to achieve stakeholder representativity in the forestry sector in forest planning at a subregional level. The methodology is validated and applied in a municipality of Galicia, north-west Spain. It is evaluated in terms of efficiency considering the effort in each stage and the results achieved.
