Power Factor Correction of Three-Phase PWM AC Chopper Fed Induction Motor Drive System Using HBCC Technique

Abstract: In this paper, a new control strategy for an induction motor (IM) drive system fed from three-phase pulse width modulation (PWM) ac chopper is proposed. The main objective of the proposed control scheme is to achieve input power factor correction (PFC) of the IM drive system under different operating conditions. PFC is achieved by continuously forcing the actual three-phase supply currents with the corresponding reference currents, which are generated in phase with the supply voltages, using hysteresis band cu… Show more

“…The a-b-c phase winding voltages 𝑉 𝑎𝑠 , 𝑉 𝑏𝑠 and 𝑉 𝑐𝑠 are first transformed to their equivalent d-q winding voltages, 𝑉 𝑑𝑠 and 𝑉 𝑞𝑠 in order to analyze motor operation. The d-q reference frame model of the three-phase induction motor is provided in equations ( 1)-( 10) (Krause et al, 2013;Metwaly et al, 2019). They are the voltage, flux linkage and torque equations of the three-phase induction motor (Sharma, Parashar and Chandel, 2020).…”

“…Simulation results obtained in MATLAB/Simulink showed different rise time, percentage speed overshoot and very minimal steady state speed error values for three different pulse width modulation techniques. In Metwaly et al (2019), an induction motor fed from three phase PWM ac chopper was presented. The control strategy involves an outer speed control loop and an inner current control loop.…”

“…The capacitors are switched in and out through mechanical contactors. However, because these contactors are relatively slow, they cannot react to sudden momentary dips in voltage, commonly observed in a weak grid, and can add significant stress to the utility grid [23]. In addition, these capacitance banks are designed to provide a unity power factor only in a few specific loads.…”

“…However, in such a system, the existence of the phase shift transformer causes the system to be bulky and expensive. An AC chopper with four switches and applying the hysteresis-band control was reported in [8]. Although the tested configuration in [8] is simple and cost-effective, the flexibility to control the speed or torque of the induction motor might be limited, and there is always a need to transfer between control modes to achieve a power factor improvement.…”
