Abstract-High current capability, good integration in urban area and zero external magnetic field are advantages of HTS cables that make them interesting for implementation in the Netherlands. So far experience with HTS cable projects is good, but still limited. Yet there is a need for a proper testing practice. Due to limited operational experience, various aspects remain to be studied. This paper focuses on electrical testing of electrical insulation, the application of power laws and the length effect. These issues are yet to be resolved, but the paper discusses their background and uncertainties. This may give direction to the ongoing studies in order to assure quality of HTS.

Abstract:A partial discharge is a nonlinear phenomenon of electrical breakdown that is confined and localized in the region of an insulating medium between two conducting materials which are at different potentials. The damage of the insulating material, which is subjected to an AC voltage during the discharge process, can be directly or indirectly measured by the bombardment of energetic electrons. In this paper we propose a LabVIEW interface for acquisition, measurement, and analysis of partial discharges using hybrid programming. The proposed interface allows the simultaneous acquisition of sixteen input channels and a detailed analysis of the current signals in the underground electric power conductor is performed for each channel. The obtained results support the feasibility of the implemented configuration for measuring, monitoring, and analysis of several effects related to the partial discharges phenomena such as thermal, acoustic, and electrical, and thus to obtain important information about the insulating material status.

In power cables fast transient signals arise because of partial discharges. These signals propagate to the cable ends where they can be detected for diagnostic purposes. To enable optimal detection sensitivity and to judge their severity the propagation parameters Z c (characteristic impedance) and g (propagation coefficient) need to be known. A three-core power cable with a single metallic earth screen around the assembly of the cores has multiple, coupled propagation modes with corresponding characteristic impedances and propagation coefficients. This paper presents a practical method to measure and analyse the cable parameters. The propagation modes are decoupled into a modal solution. The modal solution is interpreted in terms of convenient propagation modes: a shield-to-phase (SP) propagation mode between conductors and earth screen and two identical phase-to-phase (PP) modes between conductors. The measurement method, based on a pulse response measurement, to determine all transmission line parameters of the SP and PP modes is proposed and tested on a cable sample. The model is validated by predicting the time, shape and amplitude of multiple reflections in all modes resulting from an injected pulse.
