The land area of paddy has decreased every year. Karst as one of the most extensive dry land areas in Indonesia is used to raise paddy as well. This study aims to determine the role of land tenancy in rice farming efficiency and the determining factors of the efficiency of rice farming in the karst mountainous Gunungkidul. The research is located in karst mountainous area of Gunung Sewu, Gunungkidul. This study uses the stochastic frontier analysis with cost function approach. The result shows that the estimated parameter of land rent, price of urea fertilizer, labor wage, and production are significantly correlated with the cost production of rice farming. In addition, land tenancy plays an important role in increasing the efficiency of rice farming in the karst mountainous Gunungkidul. Farmers prefer to lease land in the long term between 1-4 years due to the fact that the price offered is cheaper. Other factors that improve the efficiency of rice farming are the number of household members and farm size, while the household head age decreases the efficiency of rice farming.

One of the poverty areas in Indonesia is in Gunungkidul district, an arid area in the karst mountain area. The scarcity of surface water is the main obstacle to economic development activities in the Karst Mountains of Gunungkidul, especially for agriculture and animal husbandry. The vulnerability of nature, agro-climate, and geographical conditions are not suitable for agricultural economic activities. The income of the agricultural community in the karst mountain area is minimal, which causes high poverty. The highly volatile rainfall in the region and extreme climate change can be destructive. Hence, poverty occurs in Gunungkidul, where dry land and Karst Mountains dominate geographical conditions exacerbate this condition. This study investigates the pattern of household expenditure and analyzes the factors that increase household income. This study applied descriptive analysis and income determination function. The results showed that more than half of household expenditure was for food needs. Non-farming activities have a high contribution to household income. Therefore, to increase household income, households must engage in off-farm jobs. The higher the household income, the food security will be sustained.

Coconut sugar or palm sugar is a superior product in the Kulon Progo district, which contributes to locally generated revenue; however, coconut sugar farmers' welfare is still relatively low. Therefore, it needs to be observed the main problems of coconut sugar entrepreneurs. This paper attempts to explore the program and activities taken by the university to empower the coconut farmer community as part of poverty alleviation in the Kulon Progo district, Yogyakarta. The programs were set under the triple helix framework, which involves three parties: the university, government, and coconut farmer community. This study utilized an exploratory approach to determine coconut farmers and coconut sugar entrepreneurs' problems and solutions. Two coconut farmer communities, namely Sumber Rejeki and Nuju Makmur, were taken as a sample. The analysis reveals that the coconut sugar sector's four main problems are the production of coconut sugar, lack of farmer regeneration, marketing, and management. Correspond to these problems; the empowering program consists of providing coconut tree climbing tools, product differentiation, market channeling, administration, and finance training for micro and small enterprises.
