Pouvoir, un marqueur d'évidentialité

Abstract: Liliane Tasmowski & Patrick Dendale : « Epistemic pouvoir, an evidential marker » Taking into account the close relationship between devoir and pouvoir, we argue that epistemic pouvoir should be considered an evidential marker in the same way epistemic devoir is, which means that epistemic pouvoir signals information gained by inference. After a characterization of epistemic pouvoir along these lines, we address the problem of the influence of the conditional mood on both verbs.

“…Only recently has the presence of evidential markers in these languages been the object of careful semantic description, as in RadanovaKu¦ seva (1991)(1992), Dendale (1994), Dendale & Tasmowski (1994), Dendale & De Mulder (1996), Guentchéva (1994). Apart from these works evidentiality had never been recognized as a necessary tool in describing the Romance modal system, the basic distinction between epistemic and deontic being traditionally considered as comprehensively covering the semantic space where a morphological encoding of modality can be found in Romance.…”

“…Using a cognitive-functional perspective, and assuming a relative isomorphism between inflectional and periphrastic paradigms (Marcovecchio, 2014), I compare the syntactic behavior of the auxiliaries poder and pouvoir with respect to their combinatorial possibilities, their possible paraphrases (Cornillie, 2007, Le Querler, 2001Tasmowski and Dendale, 1994), and the correspondences with the agent-oriented or sentence-oriented modal meanings they express. This contrastive analysis shows the incidence of 'conceptual distance' (Bybee, 1985) in the formal and semantic similarities of the auxiliaries involved in modality periphrasis.…”
