Potential utility of MRI in the evaluation of children at risk of renal scarring

Abstract: The detection rate for renal scarring on MRI using the fat-saturated T1-W and post-gadolinium STIR sequences is comparable to planar (99 m)Tc-DMSA. MRI is of potential utility in the evaluation of children at risk of renal scarring.

“…A utilização da ultra-sonografia com power Doppler mostrou-se inferior ao 99mTc DMSA para detecção de cicatrizes renais 42 , o mesmo ocorrendo com a ressonância magnética 43 . A urografia excretora mostrou-se inadequada para avaliação rotineira da infecção urinária na infância 44 .…”

“…One assessed the diagnostic accuracy of various MRI techniques and reported reasonable diagnostic performance. 132 This study was of reasonable quality. However, it was not conducted in an appropriate spectrum of patients, and neither the criteria used to select participants nor the time elapsing between index test and reference standard (disease progression bias) were reported.…”

“…MRI may also diagnose other coexisting conditions, such as nephrolithiasis, 35,36 which is not diagnosed by DMSA scintigraphy. Newer imaging methods that show promise in diagnosis of renal scarring include dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI and MRI using a gadolinium-enhanced short-tau inversionrecovery (STIR) sequence.…”
