Potential use of ultrasound in antioxidant extraction from Ecklonia cava

Abstract: Water and methanolic extracts of Ecklonia cava, a marine brown alga, were prepared by ultrasonic extraction (UE) and conventional extraction (CE) methods. The radical-scavenging activity and the inhibitory effects against hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 )-induced DNA damage of the extracts were investigated. All extracts prepared by CE exhibited higher total polyphenolic content than that in the extracts prepared by UE. Extraction yield and total phenolic content increased as the UE time increased. The radical-scav… Show more

“…The extracts that were obtained with acid showed better inhibition of bacterial growth when compared to the extracts that were obtained with water [ 53 ]. Lee et al [ 50 ] conducted much longer time of the UAE unlike other authors [ 49 , 52 ]. They compared the yield and the antioxidant activity of UAE extracts with the extracts that were obtained with conventional method (CE).…”

“…Since the dawn of 21st century, there has been an increase in the search for natural bioactive compounds as lead metabolites for pharmaceutical, cosmeceutical, and functional food industry (Heo et al 2010, Lee et al 2013b. This is partly due to the increase in health awareness and stringent regulations pertaining to the addition of synthetic chemicals in food and pharmaceuticals.…”

“…In particular, Ecklonia cava is a common edible brown algae that is plentiful in Jeju Island of Republic of Korea. E. cava has been identified to contain various natural substances such as carotenoids, fucoidans, and phlorotannins, which have beneficial biological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammation, anticoagulant, antiviral, and antidiabetic effects (Kang et al 2010, 2012b, 2013a. Dried forms of E. cava are consumed, but steam heated E. cava products sometimes are manufactured.…”
