Potential Toxic Metal Accumulation in Soil, Forage and Blood Plasma of Buffaloes Sampled from Jhang, Pakistan

Abstract: This study was conducted to determine the concentration of toxic metals in soil, forage and blood plasma of lactating and non-lactating buffaloes in the district Jhang, Punjab, Pakistan. Soil samples were collected from varying distances from the road side. Plasma separation was achieved by centrifugation. The concentration of arsenic (As), selenium (Se), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and cobalt (Co) were determined by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The results of t… Show more

“…Metals are transported and biomagnified from one trophic level to the next may accumulate more toxin in the food of higher animals as compare to their food contains [9]. The cadmium in the environment can easily be entered in the food chain and may cause various deleterious effects in plants, human and animals and result in undesirable physiological and biochemical changes [10]. In industrial areas, the level of cadmium and lead is high which cause the hormonal changes of plasma and abnormal liver function [11,12].…”

“…This problem of water shortage is solved by alternate sources of irrigation [2]. The wastewater is a source of some nutrients essential for soil fertility, but it also contains toxic metals that contaminate the soil and crops [3]. The metals Ni, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Cr, and Mn from wastewater contaminate the agricultural land and crops grown there and become the part of the food chain and cause various health hazards in human [4,5].…”

“…The source of mineral for grazing livestock is forage and other than forage is water and soil from which animal obtain minerals [1]. Mineral status of soil and hence forages defined the status of grazing livestock in that area, as well as many other animal factors, play an important role [2,3]. The deficiency or excess of particular minerals is due to a diet of ruminants which indicate the level of mineral concentration of serum consistently higher or below the normal concentration [4].…”
