Potential of pulsed light technology for control of SARS-CoV-2 in hospital environments

Abstract: The emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 infection and its potential transmission through touching surfaces in clinical environments have impelled the use of conventional and novel methods of disinfection to prevent its spreading. Among the latter, pulsed light may be an effective, non-chemical decontamination alternative. Pulsed light technology inactivates microorganisms and viruses by using high intensity polychromatic light pulses, which degrades nucleic acids and proteins. This review describes this technology, co… Show more

“…As a result, we end up with a supplementary surface and high distribution of UVC radiation through the whole volume of the contaminated fluids. This method of decontamination may be improved using the short pulses of UVC radiation [ 54 , 55 ]. Therefore, focusing the radiation inside the decontamination core and using the quartz metamaterials help us to optimize both of the intensity(number) of UVC sources for certain pathogens and exposition time and finally get a feasible critical intensity for almost complete decontamination, particularly, if using low-intensity lamps.…”

“…The same low inactivation rate was observed for coliphage MS2 inoculated on chopped mint, pepper, and garlic (Belliot et al., 2013). Comprehensive data on the level of inactivation obtained for 22 different viruses treated with pulsed light recently has been published (Jean et al., 2021). The rather limited efficacy of pulsed light in real food matrices versus in vitro studies is typical for light‐based inactivation technologies.…”

“…Recent works have particularly shown the efficacy of UV-C in completely inactivating corona viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, on surfaces or aerosols [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. Research on portable light sources emitting UV-C wavelengths has seen tremendous growth, especially due to demands for sterilizing surfaces [ 11 , 12 ]. It is expected that development of portable UV-C detectors would follow suit.…”
