Potential of novel drug delivery strategies for the treatment of hyperlipidemia

Abstract: Emergence of hyperlipidemia in urban population of India and the world at large is very high and accounts to several fatal diseases. This condition is known to manifest elevated levels of lipids and/or lipoproteins. Serious limitations like inadequate solubility, less absorption, less bioavailability, ineffectiveness in lowering of cholesterol levels, patient incompliance and so on are noticed with majority of anti-hyperlipidemic drugs and dosage forms, which are used conventionally. To overcome these shortcom… Show more

“…Atrovastatin was found to be compatible with β-cyclodextrin and was completely encapsulated in nanosponges. The optimized formulation showed good dissolution release profile of more than 75% atorvastatin within 60 mins in 0.1 N HCL which indicated that the solubility of atorvastatin was improved by forming nanosponges [40].…”

“…Non-invasive peroral route of administration, where the dosage form is consumed through the mouth, is the most conventional way for delivering the anti hyperlipidemic drugs [26]. This route has certain limitations such as drugs with short half-life requires frequent administration, which increases chances of missing dose of drug leading to poor patient compliance.…”

“…pathogen is the predominant cause of these distressing and persistent infections representing a serious public health challenge with increasing medical and economic importance 1 . Several classes of drugs play a significant role to effectively target these stubborn mycotic species and maintain healthy conditions of the skin, of which imidazole derivatives are one of the most popularly, used antifungal agents.…”

“…This disease can occur due to inefficient lipid metabolism, genetic defects and environmental factors like having a fat-rich diet and sedentary lifestyle. 1 Several classes of drugs play a significant role to maintain the normal levels of lipids and reduce the incidence of this condition and the complexities pertaining to it, of which statins form a major and effective group. Atorvastatin (ATV) belongs to this class of drugs, which selectively and competitively inhibits HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, a ratelimiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis.…”
