Penelitian pencarian agen tabir surya alami terus dikembangkan untuk mendapatkan agen tabir surya yang lebih aman. Tabir surya diperlukan untuk melindungi kulit dari bahaya sinar ultraviolet (UV). Sinar UV dapat bermanfaat bagi tubuh, namun menjadi berbahaya jika berlebih. Kemampuan suatu bahan dalam melindungi dari bahaya sinar UV biasa dinyatakan dalam sun protection factor (SPF). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui nilai SPF ekstrak metanol daun rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum). Penelitian ini nantinya dapat digunakan untuk menambah wawasan mengenai potensi daun rambutan untuk digunakan sebagai agen tabir surya alami. Proses ekstraksi menggunakan metode maserasi dengan pelarut metanol. Pengukuran nilai SPF dilakukan secara in vitro menggunakan metode spektrofotometri kemudian nilai absorbansi yang diperoleh dihitung menggunakan persamaan Mansur. Proses ekstraksi menghasilkan ekstrak pasta hitam kehijauan beraroma khas daun. Ekstrak metanol daun rambutan dengan konsentrasi 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, dan 1000 ppm memiliki kemampuan proteksi terhadap sinar UV, dinyatakan dalam nilai SPF berturut-turut sebesar 5,710; 10,398; 16,320; 20,920; 26,152; dan 37,983. Hasil yang berbeda dari tanaman yang sama dapat terjadi dikarenakan pengambilan bagian tubuh tanaman yang berbeda untuk diekstrak serta penggunaan jenis pelarut organik yang berbeda untuk proses ekstraksinya. Dalam penelitian ini, ekstrak metanol daun rambutan pada konsentrasi 100 dan 200 ppm memiliki kemampuan proteksi minimal, konsentrasi ekstrak 300-500 ppm memiliki kemampuan proteksi sedang, sedangkan konsentrasi ekstrak 1000 ppm memiliki kemampuan proteksi tinggi

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) has been shown to cause skin disorders, including sunburn and symptoms such as erythema, ageing and formation of wrinkles, pigmentation or dyspigmentation, DNA damage and ultimately photocarcinogenesis on prolonged exposure. It has been reported that sunscreens have beneficial effects in reducing the incidence of skin disorders and protect the skin against exogenous and endogenous harmful agents by absorption, scattering and by blocking phenomena. Ultraviolet (UV) rays are divided into three wavelength categories: UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. Skin exposure to sunlight and other climatic conditions induces the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can react with DNA, proteins, and fatty acids in the skin, resulting in oxidative damage and damage of the antioxidant system in the human body. Such injuries disrupt the skin’s regulation pathways, resulting in photoaging and the development of skin cancer. Active ingredients in sunscreen agents are synthetic substances which are classified into organic and inorganic filters. Synthetic agents have a number of serious side effects. As a result, to overcome this deleterious effects natural sunscreens were found by the researchers from nature. Natural products can be used as sunscreens and have healing, softening, rejuvenating, and sun protection properties. However, the use of sunscreen has a number of drawbacks, including inducing photoallergic dermatitis, environment pollution, and deficiency of vitamin D production. Therefore, consumers should use appropriate herbal formulations to improve sun protection as well as to avoid the side effects of synthetic sunscreens.

Daemonorops (Indonesian: jernang) resin is one of Indonesia’s leading non-timber forest products and can be developed as a source of natural antioxidants and sun protection. This study aimed to select promising solvents for extracting a Daemonorops acehensis resin and phytosome formulation with high antioxidant capacities and sun protection factor (SPF) values. Jernang resin was extracted using a water–ethanol mixture in five different ratios. The promising extract was then mixed with soy lecithin in three different formulations. A promising extract and phytosome were then selected based on their antioxidant capacities and sun protection factor (SPF) values. A liquid chromatography mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) analysis was also performed on five extracts to identify the components in the extracts that might be responsible for the biological activity. The results showed that the ethanol solvent variation and phytosome formulation influenced the antioxidant capacity and SPF value. A hundred-percent ethanolic extract and F1 phytosome exhibited the highest antioxidant capacities and SPF values. A qualitative analysis revealed the various classes of compounds in the extract and phytosome. A flavylium chromophore, dracorhodin, dominated the resin extract and was presumed to be the marker compound responsible for their antioxidant capabilities and SPF values. These findings are important for manufacturing sunscreens containing active compounds of bioactive natural resins.
