Curcumin, a naturally occurring phenolic compound isolated from Curcuma longa, has different pharmacological effects, including antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. However, curcumin has been found to have a limited bioavailability because of its hydrophobic nature, low-intestinal absorption, and rapid metabolism. Therefore, there is a need for enhancing the bioavailability and its solubility in water in order to increase the pharmacological effects of this bioactive compound. One strategy is curcumin complexation with transition metals to circumvent the abovementioned problems. Curcumin can undergo chelation with various metal ions to form metallo-complexes of curcumin, which may show greater effects as compared with curcumin alone. Promising results with metal curcumin complexes have been observed with regard to antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial activity, as well as in treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The present review provides a concise summary of the characterization and biological properties of curcumin-metal complexes. © 2019 BioFactors, 45(3):304-317, 2019

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of an anabolic steroid, stanozolol, in a model of atherosclerosis and to investigate the involvement of the modulation of the inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress in vascular lipid deposition.Low-density lipid receptor-deficient (LDLr−/−) mice were fed a standard chow diet and were each week injected subcutaneously either saline (control C group) or 20 mg/kg stanozolol (S group). After 8 weeks, the levels of cholesterol, oxidized LDL (OxLDL) and cytokines were measured in plasma, lipid deposition in aorta was evaluated by en face analysis, and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and oxidation protein were determined in liver. The S group demonstrated increases in vascular lipid deposition, triglycerides and non-HDL cholesterol levels. Stanozolol increased tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and decreased interleukin-10 as well as increased the TNF-α/IL-10 ratio. Furthermore, oxidative stress was observed in the S group, as indicated by an increase in the plasma OxLDL, as well as by lipid peroxidation and oxidation of proteins in the liver. Chronic treatment with stanozolol promoted lipid deposition in the LDLr −/− mice that could be attributed to a modification of the circulating cytokine levels and systemic oxidative stress. Our results suggest that the anabolic steroid stanozolol in the absence of functional LDL receptors by increasing systemic inflammation and oxidative stress may increase the risk of development and progression of atherosclerosis.

Общепринятое мнение о пользе физической активности для профилактики сердечно-сосудистых заболеваний не подвергается сомнению. Тем не менее сегодня широкое распространение получили различные тренировочные программы с дискуссионным соотношением пользы и вреда. Отличительными чертами такого типа физической активности являются высокая степень интенсивности физической нагрузки и большие тренировочные объемы. Нарушение режимов тренировки и отдыха при таком подходе к тренировкам часто приводит к развитию синдрома перетренированности. Понимание причин развития данного состояния на молекулярном и клеточном уровне позволит повысить эффективность планирования тренировочного процесса у соревнующихся атлетов и продлить спортивное долголетие пожилым спортсменам и любителям спорта. Авторы заявляют об отсутствии конфликта интересов.The main mechanisms of the damaging effect of excessive physical exertion on the cellular structures of the vascular endothelium and the development of systemic pathological conditions associated with this process are covered in this paper. The generally accepted view on the benefits of physical activity for the prevention of cardiovascular disease is not in doubt. However, today various training programs of debatable benefits and risks ratio are widely used. High intensity high volume training is the distinctive feature of this type of physical activity. Violation of the training and rest schedules in this approach often leads to the overtraining syndrome. Understanding the causes of this condition at the molecular and cellular levels may increase the efficiency of training planning for competing athletes and prolong sport participation of the elderly athletes and sports enthusiasts.
