Potential Medicinal Plants for the Treatment of Dengue Fever and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus

Abstract: While dengue virus (DENV) infection imposes a serious challenge to the survival of humans worldwide, severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus (SARS-CoV) remains the most devastating pandemic in human history. A significant number of studies have shown that plant-derived substances could serve as potential candidates for the development of safe and efficacious remedies for combating these diseases. Different scientific databases were used to source for literature on plants used against these infections. Th… Show more

“…Houttuynia cordata Thunb (HC) is a herbal plant that is distributed throughout Japan, Korea, China, and Southeast Asian. The extracts of H. cordata have been shown to be therapeutic and have been used to treat various diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, skin diseases, and severe acute respiratory syndrome [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ]. Several investigators have provided evidence of the antioxidant and anti-inflammation properties of H. cordata extracts and their bioactive molecules [ 19 ].…”

“…In addition, andrographolide was the main antiviral compound that was often found in A. paniculata 29 . This compound could inhibit the dengue virus in HeLa (EC50 22.739 µM) and HepG2 (EC50 21.304 µM) cells 30 . The prediction from this research could be used to develop an anti-COVID-19 drug from herbal compounds such as combination with extract or isolate that contains curcumin and neoandrographolide as the main compounds.…”

“…Merr., and Sambucus canadensis L. used globally as ethnomedicine against dengue fever ( Ichsyani et al, 2017 ; Lee et al, 2017 ; Deep et al, 2018 ; Yao et al, 2018 ; Larocca et al, 2021 ) ( Table 2 ). In another report, plants from a diverse group of plant families (31 in total with 54 species) are reported to exhibit anti-dengue activity based on traditional knowledge, where major representatives reported were Lamiaceae (10.5%), Asteraceae (9.9%), Aristolochiaceae, and Loganiaceae (each 7.2%) families ( Saleh and Kamisah 2021 ). Plants revealed by the local population to exhibit anti-dengue activity included Baccharis trimera (Less.)…”
