Potential medicinal benefits of Cosmos caudatus (Ulam Raja): A scoping review

Abstract: Cosmos caudatus is widely used as a traditional medicine in Southeast Asia. C. caudatus has been reported as a rich source of bioactive compounds such as ascorbic acid, quercetin, and chlorogenic acid. Studies have shown that C. caudatus exhibits high anti-oxidant capacity and various medicinal properties, including anti-diabetic activity, anti-hypertensive properties, anti-inflammatory responses, bone-protective effect, and anti-microbial activity. This review aims to present the potential medicinal benefits … Show more

“…Kenikir (Cosmos caudatus K.) merupakan tanaman yang dapat ditemukan di wilayah Amerika Tengah dan Asia Tenggara (Cheng et al, 2015). Daun kenikir memiliki berbagai manfaat, seperti antihipertensi, antidiabetes, dan antiinflamasi, serta meningkatkan sirkulasi darah, memperkuat struktur tulang, dan mengobati luka (Amna et al, 2013;Chan et al, 2016;Rahman et al, 2017).…”

“…Recent studies have shown that CC extract possesses free radical scavenging activities resulting in intense antioxidant effects [15]. Cosmos caudatus has various medicinal properties, including antidiabetic, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory, bone protective and antimicrobial activity [16]. Flavonoid components in the lyophilized CC extract include quercitrin, catechin, and rutin [17].…”

“…The regulation of nuclear hormones by the ubiquitin proteasome system occurs in a myriad of ways (Ismail & Nawaz 2005). Some nuclear hormone receptors are degraded in both the presence and absence of their cognate ligands, such as the estrogen, progesterone, and glucocorticoid receptors (Hoeck et al 1989, Lange et al 2000 ; Nawaz et al 1999).…”

“…Intracellular regulation of nuclear receptors by posttranslational modification by ubiquitin is well known and involves two distinct mechanisms: 1) targeted degradation of nuclear receptors by the proteasome and 2) ubiquitination-altering activity in non-degradatory ways (Ismail & Nawaz 2005). For example, estrogen, progesterone, androgen, and glucocorticoid nuclear receptors are degraded in a proteasome-dependent manner in some conditions (Hirotani et al 2001, Hoeck et al 1989, Lange et al 2000, Li et al 1999, Lin et al 2002, Nawaz et al 1999), with their heterodimeric binding partners RARγ and RXR also degraded by parallel mechanisms (Kopf et al 2000).…”
