Potential and Requirements of IT for Ambient Assisted Living Technologies

Abstract: A wide variety of IT issues have been assessed important for AAL. The extensive list of requirements makes obvious that it is not efficient to develop dedicated solutions for individual projects but to provide generic methods and reusable components. Experiences and results from medical informatics research can be used to advance AAL solutions (e.g. eHealth and knowledge-based approaches).

“…The primary goal of AAL solutions is to extend the time which elderly people can live independently in their preferred environment using ICT technologies for personal healthcare [3,4]. Presently, there is a huge demand for AAL systems, applications and devices for personal health monitoring and telehealth services [5,6]. Moreover, personal health monitoring is setting a trend with increased empowerment of citizens in healthcare, stimulated by the growing awareness and understanding of healthcare concepts and systems, i.e.…”

“… Design and architecture of technologies for home care and for support of an independent life at home, so-called Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) systems are also discussed (Ikonen & Kaasinen 2009;Rothenspieler et al 2011;Spitalewsky et al 2013). Moreover, it becomes apparent that vulnerable groups and those with special needs must be taken into particular consideration.…”

“…Based on the literature found, a list of ethical issues regarding cybersecurity in the health domain could be revealed as follows. -difficulties regarding usability (Kaplan & Litewka 2008;Spitalewsky et al 2013;Young et al 2014), -open access (Greenbaum et al 2011;McCormack et al 2016), and especially -the risk of hacking and other forms of attacks (Motti & Caine 2015;Mulligan & Schneider 2011;Tieu et al 2015;Yang 2016), which could directly affect the physical and psychological safety of affected individuals (Camara et al 2015;Ienca & Haselager 2016).…”

“…For instance, improved system awareness about occupancy would improve the reliability of alerts to family members and health care providers. One novel contribution of this study is that it complements a recent Delphi study that engaged different types of stakeholders across a range of ages to identify requirements for AAL technology but did not specifically focus on older adults over the age of 75 (32). In addition, this study engaged older adults early in the design process for AAL technology.…”
