Potential Ameliorative Effects of Qing Ye Dan Against Cadmium Induced Prostatic Deficits via Regulating Nrf-2/HO-1 and TGF-β1/Smad Pathways

Abstract: Background/Aims: Cadmium (Cd) is an environmental pollutant with reproductive toxicity. Swertia mileensis is used in Chinese medicine for the treatment of prostatic deficits and named as Qing Ye Dan (QYD). This study was undertaken to investigate the potential protective effects of QYD against Cd-induced prostatic deficits. Method: Rat model of prostatic deficits was induced by 0.2 mg/kg/d CdCl2 subcutaneous injection for 15 days. The prostatic oxidative stress was evaluated by detecting the levels … Show more

“…These in vitro studies are also supported by in vivo data. In the rat prostate, cadmium induced EMT as evidenced by loss of E-cadherin and increased vimentin [21]. In the normal kidney, cadmium induces markers of EMT [22,23], consistent with the loss of E-cadherin expression seen following cadmium challenge [24,25].…”

“…Both Nrf-2 and TGF- β 1 are upregulated in the process of airway remodeling in asthma [53]. There is a crosstalk between Nrf-2/HO-1 and TGF- β 1/Smad pathways in prostatic deficits such as prostatic oxidative stress, inflammation, and prostatic EMT [54]. Possibly, Tetrandrine mediated the improvement of asthma through regulating oxidative stress- and inflammation-evoked airway remodeling by affecting TGF- β 1/Nrf-2/HO-1 signaling cascades.…”

“…Swertiamarin is one of the mainly bioactive substances in QYD [8]. Our previous studies confirmed that QYD and its main active ingredient swertiamarin could protect against BPH and cadmium-induced prostatic deficits due to their properties of anti-hyperplasia, anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory [9, 10].…”
