Show more

“…Fresh leaf extracts of Blepharocalyx salicifolius (Myrtaceae) have been shown to reduce the survival and germination of lettuce seeds (Mairesse et al 2007). Souza--Filho et al (2006) observed that methanolic and hexane extracts of M. guianensis inhibited seed germination of the weeds Senna obtusifolia and Mimosa pudica. Crushed leaves and aqueous leaf extract of the species Campomanesia adamantium and E. dysenterica, tested in soil, have been found to reduce the length of sesame seedlings (Souza et al 2007).…”

“…According to Souza Filho et al (2006), allelochemicals produced by plants affect local vegetation and the succession of others plants, as well as playing a role in the induction of dormancy and seed preservation. Such chemicals therefore constitute an important mediator of population dynamics because they determine the pattern and density of vegetation, in natural and crop systems alike.…”

“…Inhibition of HPPD disrupts the biosynthesis of carotenoids and results in the bleaching of leaves, due to a loss of chlorophyll. In the field, sorgoleone has an inhibitory effect on the growth of several species, including beans, wheat, and soy, although its greatest effect has been shown to be on the growth of weeds (Roth et al 2000;Souza Filho et al 2006). Sorgoleone is biosynthesized, during early seedling establishment, by root hairs, which possess the entire metabolic machinery (Dayan 2006;Baerson et al 2008aBaerson et al , 2008b.…”

“…Nonetheless, these procedures have been demonstrated to be ineffi cient (Souza Filho et al, 2006). The synthetic herbicides currently utilized in agriculture have organochlorine and organophosphate chemicals in their composition.…”

“…In fact, the liberation of chemical substances that have phytotoxic activities can have a signifi cant infl uence on the population dynamics of plants in the countryside, since these substances may alter the pattern and the density of the vegetation (Souza Filho & Alves, 2000, Souza Filho, 2002, Souza Filho et al, 2006. Taking this into consideration, our study aims to enable quantitative and qualitative improvements in the production of food on both small and large agricultural properties in Brazil.…”
