A procedure for rapid multiplication technique of potato using stem cuttings induced to grow at the leaf nodes by removal the apical growing point is described. Sequential five experiments were conducted in the greenhouses and in the field of a private farm (Nubaria district, Bahaira Governorate, Egypt), during the period from 2012 to 2015. In the first experiment, the number of stem cuttings in the different tested cultivars ranged from 16.25 (cv. Patrones) to 38.50 (cv. Spunta). In the second experiment, the rooting hormone K-IBA improved root initiation and development of Spunta cv. and increased survival, root dry weight and quality, additionally had the highest values of tuber yield. The rate of multiplication was 400: 1 against 9: 1 for the conventional method. In the third experiment, a rooting substrate of sand: peat (1:1) enhanced survival, improved growth, yield attributes and M.R. In the fourth experiment, incidence of common potato viruses (PVX, PVY, PLRV and TRV) was negative in second generation of tubers when stem cutting technique was used. In the field study of the fifth experiment, the tuber yields and quality with rooted cuttings were statistically similar for crops from imported seed tubers, however, the proportion of marketable tubers (> 60 mm diameter) was approximately 59% and 50% less in the crops from rooted cutting and tubers from stem cutting, respectively, compared with those from imported seed tubers. Rooted stem cuttings gave the highest net profit. These results indicate that the stem cuttings and small tuber derived from stem cutting are two methods of growing potatoes, which need to be further evaluated for socioeconomic assessment by farmers.

This review paper describes a novel approach to plant cultivation under soil-less culture. At present, global climate change is expected to raise the risk of frequent drought. Agriculture is in a phase of major change around the world and dealing with serious problems. In future, it would be difficult task to provide a fresh and clean food supply for the fast-growing population using traditional agriculture. Under such circumstances, the soil-less cultivation is the alternative technology to adapt effectively. The soil-less system associated with the Hydroponic and Aeroponics system. In the aeroponics system, plant roots are hanging in the artificially provided plastic holder and foam material replacement of the soil under controlled conditions. The roots are allowed to dangle freely and openly in the air. However, the nutrient rich-water deliver with atomization nozzles. The nozzles create a fine spray mist of different droplet size at intermittently or continuously. This review concludes that aeroponics system is considered the best plant growing method for food security and sustainable development. The system has shown some promising returns in various countries and recommended as the most efficient, useful, significant, economical and convenient plant growing system then soil and other soil-less methods.

Potato seed production by conventional methods represents a sizeable investment that, when passed on to farmers, can decrease their profit margins. Potato minitubers produced by aeroponic systems are space- and cost-efficient, and they also provide healthy propagules to be used by farmers. We evaluated the effects of different misting nozzle types, with and without an antidrip feature, and spray direction on potato minituber yield using the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) Aeroponic System. Potato plants (cv. Agata) propagated from sprouts were grown in a covered, high-density 100-L polyethylene bucket. The experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design with four replicates and eight treatments combining misting nozzle types (Fogger, MA-30, and CoolNet) with and without antidrip and comparing upward with downward spray directions. Plants were evaluated weekly from 33 to 68 days after transplant (DAT). The parameters used to evaluate treatments were number and mass of minitubers as a function of harvest times, dry mass of roots, stems, leaves, and total biomass. The number and fresh weight of minitubers, as well as root dry weight, stems, leaves, and total biomass were affected by misting nozzle types and spray direction. Treatments also affected biomass partitioning of roots, stem biomass, and the shoot:root ratio. There was also an effect of harvest time on the number and fresh weight of minitubers for various combinations of misting nozzle type and spray direction, except for minituber number with the CoolNet misting nozzle without antidrip and downward spray direction. On the basis of the assessed parameters, the best minituber production system was achieved with the Fogger spray combined with no antidrip, a rate of 12 L·h−1, and with the downward spray direction. The UFV Aeroponic System produced an average of 491 minitubers per plant. This system is simple to implement and may lead to a more affordable upscaling of potato seed minituber production.
