Postsclerotherapy Hyperpigmentations: A One‐Year Follow‐Up

Abstract: In a prospective study of 100 sequential varicose patients treated with sclerotherapy, 15 had some light brown pigmentations at the end of the treatment. One year later, 1 patient still had some linear pigmentations, while 4 other patients had a single, macular, barely visible pigmentation of no cosmetic significance.

“…The importance of optimal sclerotherapy practice, namely good injection technique, careful choice, strength of the sclerosant, prompt evacuation of retained blood, and adequate compression have been stressed by several authors 6,21 . Large diameter venulectasias are the vessels most likely to produce hyperpigmentation 13,22,23 .…”

“…One of the common complications of sclerotherapy of dilated lower limb veins is the occurrence of cutaneous pigmentation 1,2 . The incidence of pigmentation has reportedly varied between types of solutions used, 3–5 but techniques and concentrations of solutions injected may be more important factors 1,6 . Clinically the pigmentation usually occurs within the first 6 weeks following treatment and in most cases will fade spontaneously over the next 2 years with the vast majority fading within 6 months 7 .…”

“…CUTANEOUS HYPERPIGMENTATION that occurs after venous sclerotherapy is common and has been reported to last up to 6 months in 30% of patients, and more than 6 months in approximately 10% of patients treated with polydocanol (POL) 1–5 . The development of cutaneous hyperpigmentation is secondary to the sclerosing agent and the inflammatory reaction it incites.…”
