“…Similarly, Gerbaulet et al [7] reported 89% 5-year survival in node negative patients in contrast with 55 % 5-year survival rates in node-positive patients (p < 0.0001). In the series of Atkovar et al [1], the 5-year disease-free survival rates for patients with and those without pelvic node metastases were 82.5% and 36.6% (p = 0.0017).…”

“…It was postulated that addition of pelvic irradiation following radical hysterectomy provided improved local control but not increased survival rate in patients with positive pelvic nodes, however, that postoperative irradiation was associated with increased overall urinary morbidity, gastrointestinal morbidity and higher reoperation rate [18]. Atkovar et al [19] assessed the role of postoperative radiotherapy following surgery for clinical early stage carcinoma of the cervix and concluded that postoperative radiotherapy should be used in patients who had undergone simple hysterectomy and who had unfavorable pathological findings following radical hysterectomy. In the light of these findings, we conclude that since the overall incidence of complications still remains high, the procedure must be performed by a skilled surgeon with sufficient experience to reduce morbidity.…”
