Postexercise hypotension in conscious SHR is attenuated by blockade of substance P receptors in NTS

Abstract: In hypertensive subjects, a single bout of dynamic exercise results in an immediate lowering of blood pressure back toward normal. This postexercise hypotension (PEH) also occurs in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). In both humans and SHRs, PEH features a decrease in sympathetic nerve discharge, suggesting the involvement of central nervous system pathways. Given that substance P is released in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) by activation of baroreceptor and skeletal muscle afferent fibers during… Show more

“…Thus we speculate that group B neurons may be inhibitory interneurons and could participate in the baroreflex depression reported after microinjection of higher doses of ANG II into this nTS region. In contrast, SP influences respiratory and gastric as well as cardiovascular function (10,24,66,72). Furthermore, the localization of our group B neurons responsive to ANG II and SP in the dorsal medial nTS region (77) is congruent with the distribution of vagal afferent projections from the esophagus and stomach (62,80).…”

“…Apart from these chronic effects of exercise, a single bout of dynamic exercise is known to induce hypotension in the post-exercise period in hypertensive subjects (3) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) (4)(5)(6). Post-exercise hypotension (PEH) is associated with no change or a reduction of heart rate (HR) (7,8) and a reduction in cardiac (9) and peripheral sympathetic nerve activity (10,11).…”

“…The central neural pathways that contribute to this postexercise sympathoinhibition include barosensitive neurons within the nucleus tractus solitarius (6) and the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM; see Ref. 19).…”
